A root canal treatment is procedure to save a tooth from extraction. 

When:

A root canal treatment is most commonly done when patient has a toothache in any tooth due to caries/cavity or exposure of pulp due to severe attrition.

Why:

If root canal is not performed in due course of time, tooth ache and the caries/ cavity may worsen which can lead to further swelling and pain.
